The road to achieving your best life is not straight, it involves many twists, turns, potholes and rough roads. Some you can see and some surprise the heck out of you. Some parts of the road are well lit up and some are dark as black.
You need a great deal of faith that you will reach your goal. You have to hold on firmly to the belief that you will reach your destination no matter the difficulties of the journey. If you don’t believe that you will get there then what is the point of even embarking on this arduous journey? And, if you don’t keep the destination in mind, the journey seems way harder than it is.
If I want to become a UFC fighter but I am currently in an office job and I am overweight and I have not worked out for over a year. I have to believe that I will become a UFC fighter and hold on to that goal firmly. Only then will I do the work that I need to do to get there. There will be a lot of negativity around me which is normal. From the outside, the goal looks unrealistic. Colleagues may mock me. Social media may tell me I am too old at 22. My parents might tell me to be realistic. My wife may say stop being stupid. The bills won’t stop. Rent does not pause for dreams.
I could easily agree with everything they say, conform to society’s standards and forget my dream altogether.
Or, I could say I don’t agree. Why not me? I am built differently. I am made for this. I am not perfect but I will work harder than anyone else to achieve my goal. People don’t really know you, Maybe you are in a league of your own. Maybe you are special. Maybe this is your destiny.
So you have to be delusional. You have to be so positive it is toxic. Only then will you do everything in your power to get to where you want to go. Only then will the office job make sense as part of the journey.. You work in the office job to pay your bills and you use all of the time outside of it to train.
And you train relentlessly. You study videos of fighters. You don’t just train Jiu Jitsu but Muay Thai too because you have a natural aptitude for it. You read books on mindset and psychology. Read about all the great warriors past and present. You learn how many UFC fighters started late on and achieved big things.
You start focusing on all the positive things in your life that made your goal possible. You remember all the times as a kid that you punched the bag in anger. You remember the inflated punch bag ball thing your parents got you as a birthday gift that you used to punch all day just for the fun of it. Then you realise you are perfectly aligned with who you are made to be. That office job is not even a problem anymore because you know you won’t be in it for long. You have found your element. You have found a new joy for life.
All of this happened because you blocked out the noise and were delusional to believe in your dreams and achieve your goal. They now see you as crazy and obsessed. One track minded. They start to think if anyone will make it, it will be you.
What does that dream look like for you? Can you visualise it so it feels real? Can you make it concrete enough to pursue. The first step is being clear on what you want. What moves you? What excites you? What can you go after so obsessively that hours fly by. Where can you find the flow state? What can you master?
